29 Great Ocean Road (2nd time) - Day 2

Cape Patton

let me go to sleep!
We went back to Kennett River to visit the koala bears at our favorite spots. This morning there were many parrots also; some with red chest and green tails/wings, and some in red and blue. As they know they will be fed by visitors, they are more than willing to land on your head or shoulders. One landed on our friend's hat and a few attempted on me. Since I did not wear my hat, I did not let them. There were a number of ducks too. We spotted two koala bears sleeping on the branches and a few more up the road.

We then visited a rocky beach where people stacked stones, similar to the way people make cairns on the trail. I got to explore a number of rock pools.  While I did not find any crabs, I did come across a number of small fish and a big stripped one which was about a foot long.

We saw many surfers at Bells Beach and they were good. There was this older guy using a paddle board and he was amazing.  He would paddle out,  ride the wave while steering with his paddle, and turn back when he almost hit the shore; and he was on his feet all the time - quite a sight to watch!  (We found out later, at the museum, that the wider paddle board is easier to maneuver and is preferred by older surfers who do not want to give up the sport). When we left, we saw somebody riding a bicycle while holding his board in one hand. I am amazed at  how well he balanced. I guess if he can surf, he must be very good at balancing.

Next up is the Surfing Museum in Torquay and it was an interesting visit. I did not know the original surf boards came from Hawaii, and they were over 12 feet long and made of solid wood (vs the shorter, lighter synthetic boards today).  There was a surf board resting on a stand in front of a big wave photo ... we couldn't resist the photo op. We started talking to an attendant and he enlightened us on some of the surfing terminology (e.g. natural vs goofy for the way you stand on the surf board) and surfing techniques. I found his conversation the best part of the visit.

the World Champion
Dinner was at another fish and chips place.  The food was good, but nothing to write about.
