28 Great Ocean Road (2nd time) - Day 1

Today we went  back to the Great Ocean Road. It started drizzling about half an hour after we started and it was still raining now at 11 pm. We more or less stopped at the same places we visited last time, but cut short the walk abouts. The scenery looked different this time since it was raining. Other than the water and the sky which were grey, the cliffs and vegetation looked more vivid because they were wet.


We went back to Halladale Point (where we found our private grotto and rock pools), but the path was too slippery to use. So we went another way and saw about 8 people surfing. A few of them were pretty good. According to one of the surfers, this place is better than Bells Beach because there are fewer people and bigger waves!







It was drizzling most of the day and it started to rain harder when we got to the Twelve Apostles ... You can see the rain drops on the pictures.  The day did not get better when we had to lug our luggages over the multi-level decking at the motel in the pouring rain.  And it got worse when some young kids next door partied into 3+ AM despite repeated warnings from the owner.  Oh well, at least I did not get sunburned as I did on the last visit!

06 Flinders Ranges - Day 4 - Leaving ...

an old building in Rawnsley Park Station We are leaving Flinders Ranges today!  But before we left, we got to check out the old house just outside the reception.  I assumed it was an original building in the station … it has a living area, a blacksmith shop / tool shed (with various old implements in it) and a storage space.  There is an old wagon outside the building, and its wheels are taller than Karen! a lookout in Mt Remarkable NP We took the scenic route instead of the highway and ran into miles of grazing pastures, followed by (presumably harvested) wheat fields and finally vineyards.  These barren landscapes go on as far as the eyes can see!  And some of these vast expanses are really pretty.  Our first stop was the Alligator Gorge in Mt Remarkable National Park.  There are tons of good hikes in the park, but we went there mainly to break up the long drive instead of serious hiking.  We did two 15 minutes walks to look at th...

30 Phillip Island

ferry from Queenscliff to Sorrento  Phillip island was the destination for today. We had an option to take the ferry for part of the way or drive there directly. Since driving will get us there faster and free us from the ferry's schedule, we pressed Start and followed the directions as per the GPS.  And after about 20 minutes, we found ourselves by the ferry dock!  As it turned out, the GPS was set to the ferry dock accordingly to the original itinerary. Oh well, so David had less driving to do and we got to enjoy another experience, albeit at a cost of almost $100! The ferry was of a good size and the ride was smooth. We obtained a combo pass for the three different attractions at Phillip Island. The first stop was the Churchill Island Heritage Farm. It used to be a real working farm, now it is used for demonstrations: cow milking, sheep shearing, whip cracking and dog handling, etc. The cow can produce 4 litres of milk a day and David went for his Kodak mome...

02 Adelaide - Day 2

Even though we got up at 7, we didn't leave the hotel until 10 or so.  It took us a while to sort out the change in the car rental pick up (from airport to downtown) and then the mobile data connection ... but they were all happy endings in the end! We rushed over to the Adelaide Botanical Garden to catch the guided tour at 10:30.  It was a small group and the guide was very knowledgeable.  We learned that they are pushing for the Mediterranean plants in Adelaide as they require little water and are very hardy under the harsh sun.  A lot of these plants have waxy leaves to minimize the loss of moisture, silver grey in color to reflect the sunlight and offer UV protection, leaves are positioned and shaped in such a way to collect water and direct them to the main stem ... maybe we can learn a thing or two from these plants!  Another interesting tidbit is the Bunya Pine, whose pine cone is the size of a football and weighs about 5 kg - you definitely don't want...
