20161013 - 20161015_Hong Kong
Oct 13-15: Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong isn't new to us, so we didn't do many touristy things. Instead we focused on eating the delicious food that could be found in Hong Kong! These include:
1) Lunch at Cafe Malacca for some Singaporean/Malaysian food that Lesley was missing. We had Rojak, Bakut Teh, Char Kway Teo, Asam Laksa, Chicken Satay, Chai Tow Kway (black version), and Chwee Kueh. So good! Unfortunately for Karen most of it was subtly spicy. The Rojak was a surprise because it starts off very sweet, and then it has a lingering spice that coats the throat; whereas the Laksa was a sour and spicy taste that immediately filled the mouth. A yummy way to start our visit in Hong Kong!
2) High Tea at Mandarin Oriental
3) A home made dinner of Wagyu Oxtail with egg noodles and vegetables finished with a lemongrass and mint Granita on lime jello. This is a signature dish of Angela's and was "fall off the bone, melt in your mouth delicious"!! The accompanying vegetables were also cooked perfectly with the taste of the vegetables clearly coming through. The granita was a refreshing way to finish the meal and to cleanse the palate. What a delicious way to end the day with my loving family!
4) Lunch at Yung Kee included dishes like Thousand year old egg, Char Siew, Roasted Goose, Roasted Pork, Braised beef brisket, Lai Noodles, 'Combination' meat Congee, Wonton, Shrimp Dumpling, Egg Tart, Laughing Mouth Tart, Sweet Egg Twist drizzled with honey, Green bean soup and sesame soup. The dishes were all good, but the top winners were the Char Siew, Egg tart and the green bean soup!
5) Dinner at the Royal Yacht Club was yummy with fresh oysters from around the world, various meat and seafood dishes, and then a variety of desserts! Lesley definitely over indulged with the latter, having Crepe Suzette, Vanilla bean ice cream, chocolate soufflé, some ginger soufflé and apple tart.... definitely going to have gained the 10 lbs she resigned herself to ;)
6) Dim sum at City Hall was good fun with the dishes being advertised and ordered from the carts moving around.
We weren't complete sloths in this trip though! We did some shopping in Mong Kok and Uniqlo, explored the Hong Kong Story exhibit at the Hong Kong Museum of History, and also walked through the botanical and zoological gardens. Uniqlo was another great success with Karen and Lesley purchasing many items for 160 HKD - great deals! And the Hong Kong Story was an interesting visit, as we walked on the tour with a docent. He told some good stories and was very enthusiastic, but he went overtime by over an hour! So eventually we had to leave early or we would be late for dinner. The exhibit is well done and quite interesting. Getting to know about the different peoples of Hong Kong and seeing how Hong Kong has developed in the last 100 years is an interesting story. Maybe a longer visit next time!
We did not have any pictures from Hong Kong, but here's one for the Hokkaido trip ...
