15 Freycient, TAS - Day 2

Wineglass Bay
We started our day with the Wineglass Bay cruise. It was a 4 hours cruise around the Freycinet Peninsula and the boat did a return trip from Coles Bay to Wineglass Bay.  Wineglass Bay is rated as the second best beach in Australia. On the way, I happened to see a flying fish. It was quite amazing - the fish was less than a foot long and it stayed in the air by flapping the two fins on its sides. It flew quite fast - almost at the same speed as our boat. The sailor said the reason the fish flew was because the boat disturbed it.  I stayed outside for most of the trip and did not see another one.
Orange lichens on most of the rocks along the shore!
The sea was calm and it was a sunny day. We saw eagles and seals. Someone saw the dolphins, but I missed that.  We also got close to the shore and saw different rock formations with bright orange lichens on some of them.  Lunch was a bento box like meal with smoked salmon, cold cuts, cheese & crackers and some vegetables.  We did not expect much from lunch, but everything was fresh and was very tasty. Most of us took a nap on the way back since there were nothing new to see.

Mother and child
We went for a hike to the Wineglass Bay lookout after the cruise. When we were at the parking lot, we saw our first wallaby with a baby in her pouch. Since David was driving, I was the one taking the pictures - mom and baby looked so good when mom was standing up facing you.  The mother moved quite slowly and I think it was because the baby was too heavy for her.

It took us about 35 minutes to climb to the lookout and the view was very nice. The scenery is always good when you hike up a hill. You can see very far and the beach looks beautiful. David and I decided to continue our hike down to the beach – a 1 hour return trip.

The beach was quite nice, but we did not have much time to explore. After we got to Wineglass beach, David decided to continue to Hazards Beach - a 30 minutes walk across the isthmus to the other side of the peninsula. I went back on my own.  There were hardly anyone around since it was after 6pm and the walk was quite enjoyable. David made good time coming back, I only needed to wait an extra half hour for him.  He did have a scary moment on his way back across the isthmus.  As he came around a corner in the narrow path with bushes on either side, he saw two good size animals.  For a split second, he froze on the spot because he forgot he was in Australia and could not comprehend what those two animals were.  He thought they were the raptors (as in the Jurassic Park movie) vs the deer that he used to see in Canada.  He was quite relieved when he finally came to his senses and figured out that they were just wallabies!

Yummy crayfish dinner
We made it back with enough time for a quick shower before dinner.

brushtail possum
On our way out from the dining room, we saw a possum and David took a few good pictures of it.
